Toast Hawaii

[Source: Side-Line, October 2nd, 2006]

ClientToast Hawaii, the record label of Depeche Mode member Andrew Fletcher, has lost its only band, Client. The news was already known for a while in smaller circles but has now been confirmed by Kate Holmes to Side-Line: "It was a mutual decision as Andy was touring with DM for most of
2005-6 and we didn’t want to stop Client and wait. We also became disillusioned with the way Mute got swallowed up by EMI. We still see Andy though as he lives round the corner from us. Maybe he will come on tour with us next."

The band has just finished their new album - provisionally called "Heartland" and mainly produced by Youth. The band is now looking for a release somewhere in 2007. At the moment the band has 4 licensing deals which are about to be signed for Europe, Central and North America. Client expects to be making an announcement on their website pretty soon. So what can you expect from "Heartland", the 3rd Client album? Kate: "It is our best material yet and Youth has injected a New Order/NIN edge to the tracks. We also bring back the guitar for this album!"

Brown Owl doc, etc.

Home reports, that the Brown Owl documentary is now excluded from the best of release. Also the Martyr video, directed by Andreas Nilsson, has been rejected and replaced by a "video montage."

Hugely influential and hailed by Q magazine as "the most popular electronic band the world has ever known", Depeche Mode follow 25 incredibly successful years of sublime, superlative electronica with their first ever Best Of collection released on Mute on November 13th.

Brimming with 17 hit singles that span their incredible and varied career, this eagerly anticipated album also contains the brand new track 'Martyr' which pulses with their relentlessly energetic sound and it sits immaculately amongst their luminous history. Martyr will be released as a single early November.

With all of the tour things, and the upcoming releases, I just noticed that I never mentioned that the band has an official MySpace area. Truth said, that's probably because I have to spend too much time moderating over it, but regardless... :)

Check out our MySpace area. While it does not offer anything truly exclusive in the way of content (the official site covers that area nicely), you *DO* have the opportunity to connect with a very large number of fellow fans (current count is well over 100,000!).

Depeche Mode cancel Tel Aviv gig

Article located here

Depeche Mode cancel Tel Aviv gig(From our correspondent Gordon S. in Israel.) What was written in the stars for weeks but denied by the band and management has now also become reality. After launching multiple messages in the international and israeli press that the band would for sure come to Tel Aviv for a concert for which already 40.000 tickets were sold, the band has now finally backed out of the event. According to the band it would be the technical staff refusing to fly over. The least one can say is that there are some serious questions marks to be put next to this very late decision. Why did the management and band continue to say the band would perform? Why would the technical staff react so late when they were supposedly informed about the concert taking place anyhow? Obviously the first reactions from Israeli fans is not really positive, here are some we gathered in the past few hours: (Doron K. from Tel Aviv) "Why have they been lying to us for such a long time? Do they think we are retarded?", (Sharon T. from Bat Yam) "The band has made a very easy choice, they can sit nicely in a plane, do a concert here and then fly back. We get tons of dynamite flown over to us from Hezbollah and still we continue our lives. Who is taking the biggest risk here?", (Eben Y. from Petah Tiqwa) "All I can say is that this is disgusting. An insult to us. They earn tons of money on our backs and still can't find the effort to support us, they better play in Iran then...". Other reactions were less extreme but the message remains the same: why was this decision stretched over such a long period?

"The most popular electronic band the world has ever known" - Q
"One of the greatest British pop groups of all time" - Sunday Telegraph

Depeche Mode's 'Touring The Angel' was one of the most successful, highly grossing and critically acclaimed tours of the last year. Hailed as the greatest live performances of their career, it can be re-lived from September 25th when it's released as a special edition 3-disc set, featuring the full-length live show and a host of exclusive extras on two DVDs and a live audio CD.

Directed by Blue Leach, who has previously worked with R.E.M, it was recorded at Milan's Fila Forum on February 18th and 19th 2006 and sees the band at their live best with a pulsing sound, electric stage presence and ecstatic audience.

"Touring the Angel was probably the most enjoyable, rewarding live show we've ever done", says Dave Gahan. "The new material was just waiting to be played live. It took on a life of its own. With the energy of the crowds, it just came to life"

"It had been four years since the last tour, so we were ready to take the album on the road" adds Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher. "For us, everything came together - it was one of our definitive live moments, especially as we got to perform older, equally special tracks."

The first DVD features over 20 stunning live songs, including the recent hit singles 'Precious', 'A Pain That I'm Used To', 'Suffer Well' and 'John The Revelator' plus the definitive 'Just Can't Get Enough', 'I Feel You', 'Enjoy The Silence' and many more.

DVD2 features a range of exclusive extras, including: two bonus live songs - 1986's smash-hit 'A Question of Lust' and 'Playing The Angel's 'Damaged People' - plus a 20-minute documentary featuring Anton Corbijn, who directed the video for 'Suffer Well' and created the tour's six stage screens, which also appear here.

"We worked with Anton Corbijn on the stage designs, which gave a continuity from the videos" adds Dave Gahan. "It was definitely felt like one of our strongest tours - both musically and visually"

Additionally, the DVD boasts the official tour announcement from Germany, summer 2005, and the previously unreleased 'Playing The Angel' electronic press kit. Meanwhile, the audio CD features over thirty minutes of stunning live tracks from the concert.

The European leg of the world tour followed 24 American dates and featured four UK shows - including two at London's Wembley Arena. It sold-out 69 arena dates throughout 30 countries, with 800,000 tickets sold in Europe alone, and was their first since 2001's 'Exciter', where they played to nearly two million people. In total, Depeche Mode played to 2.5 million people across 31 countries this year.

International sales of 'Playing The Angel' have surpassed two million, seeing them reach Number 1 in eighteen countries, plus Top Ten in the UK, US and Canada. The album has been certified multiple platinum and gold in 20 countries.

Depeche Mode are: Dave Gahan, Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher and Martin Gore.

A few comments from the boys:

"We're excited that Goldfrapp will be supporting us for some of our festival dates this summer," said Dave Gahan. "There's a real connection between their music and ours."

"I'm looking forward to seeing Goldfrapp live," says Martin Gore. "It makes for an exciting bill."

We are starting to go through the wealth of content that is currently building up from "Touring The Angel". Here are three video nuggets. In the first clip (filmed Halloween 2005, at the Jacksonville Florida rehearsals), Anton does his best impression of Fletch. In the second (filmed April 26th, 2006, at the Concord, California rehearsals), the band play a rather goth version of "Photographic". Lastly, we have KesslerCam(tm)! Check out Mr. Kessler's footage of the band recording "John The Revelator", back in April of 2005.

Conventions & Meet ups

As many of you have probably seen, there are many conventions and meet-ups on the west coast. After some discussion, a lot of us would like to do that on the east coast as well...Somewhere central like DC...

Any thoughts on this?

DM in DC Pt 2

I hope all of those who got to go to the shows on this leg of the tour had an amazing time. I had a wonderful time in DC - so happy to meet some fellow DM fans!
Here's two shots I took - Unfortunately, one of the security guards took my memory stick - even though he gave it back afterwards...So I didn't get to catch many shots.
If anyone has some that they'd like posted on here, feel free to let me know!

DM in DC

Hi all!

I just wanted to say "Thanks!" to everyone who came out on Sunday. I had a fantastic time in DC and the show was amazing. I was disappointed in the lack of "Shake the Disease", but all in all, a wonderful show!

See ya'll next time!

Great outs not exactly their "mode"...

[Source: Newsday, by Glenn Gamboa, May 11th, 2006]

It's a mix that Gore said works for the band, who have subtitled the latest album "Pain and Suffering in Various Tempos," though "Playing the Angel" is more uptempo, if not upbeat. "I think the things we write about are more palatable to people when the music is uptempo," Gore said, with a laugh.

The band's live show uses a similar mix, as Gahan tackles the brawnier dance numbers such as "Enjoy the Silence" and "Personal Jesus," while Gore handles the delicate ballads such as "Home" and "Goodnight Lovers."

"It's light and shade," Gore said. "They draw each other out."

The same can be said of Gahan and Gore, who both released solo albums in 2003 leading to speculation that Depeche Mode would call it quits. However, Gore said that scenario was "no more likely than any other time."

"We stay together because we realize we create something that's special," he said. "It's greater than the sum of its parts."

Depeche Mode shorts KC fans at Starlight show?

[Source: The Kansas City Star, by Timothy Finn, May 11th, 2006]

The 5,500 fans who attended Wednesday night's Depeche Mode concert at Starlight Theatre got much less than they bargained for.

The concert was cut short not long after the band's road manager announced that lead singer Dave Gahan could no longer perform.

"We are unable to continue because we have lost our man in the middle," he said.

Gahan sang the first six songs, the last of which was "Stripped." The band fumbled the beginning to that song, then restarted it. That's when things turned weird. Gahan messed up some of the lyrics and, for the third time in six songs, turned his microphone toward the crowd so fans would sing the chorus. Some fans up front said Gahan seemed distressed. Others thought his voice wasn't in top form.

"When the band messed up, it looked like he was upset," said Diane Plymale of Overland Park.

"I thought he looked agitated during "Stripped," said Mike Winkler. "His voice sounded all right but it wasn't that haunting baritone he's known for."

After "Stripped," the band started "In Your Room," but halted it, too. After some huddling onstage, Martin Gore, the band's chief songwriter, performed "Home." Then someone announced that the band was experiencing "technical difficulties," so Gore sang "It Doesn't Matter Two."

After the manager's announcement, the crowd was asked whether Gore should keep singing. Most people cheered in approval. Gore told them Gahan had suffered a "medical emergency" and sang three more songs. Then the crowd was told the show was officially
over - about 50 minutes after it started.

Live Nation, which promoted the show, referred The Star to the Mitch Schneider Organization, a public relations firm in Sherman Oaks, California. As of noon Thursday band had not issued an official statement about the show or any plans for a makeup concert - if there will be one.

Fans, some of whom drove from St. Louis and Omaha, Nebraska, are hoping for some retribution from a band that doesn't tour often. Tickets for Wednesday's show were $75 plus service charges.

"I'm a huge fan," said Plymale, who had seats 10 rows from the stage. "It's not the money; I want to see them again. INXS rescheduled; why can't they?"

Winkler said he thought Gore could have helped the situation by performing more than six songs.

"There was some consolation having Martin come out," he said. "But I wish he would have done more."

Laryngitis

DEPECHE MODE FORCED TO CANCEL TONIGHT'S CHICAGO SHOW
AND ENDED LAST NIGHT'S KANSAS CITY SHOW EARLIER THAN EXPECTED DUE TO SINGER DAVE GAHAN'S LARYNGITIS

BAND OFFER SINCERE APOLOGIES TO FANS AND THANK THEM FOR THEIR LONGTIME SUPPORT

DEPECHE MODE has to unfortunately cancel tonight's (Thursday, May 11) performance at the Allstate Arena in Chicago as lead singer DAVE GAHAN has laryngitis. After seeing a doctor in Chicago this morning, he was advised to cancel the show and rest his voice. At this time, a make-up show is not planned due to the band's scheduling but management is looking into it. Tickets for Chicago will be refunded at point of purchase.

Meanwhile, the group had to regrettably end their show last night (May 10) at the Starlight Amphitheatre in Kansas City, MO earlier than expected. Coming off three concerts in Mexico, GAHAN's voice was challenged throughout the concert by the unusually cold temperatures at the venue.

An hour into the concert - after the segment where MARTIN GORE sings a few songs - GAHAN was unable to return as he lost his voice, leaving GORE to continue on lead vocals for another 25 minutes or so.

DEPECHE MODE offer their sincerest apologies to their fans in Kansas City and Chicago and want to thank them for their longtime and dedicated support.

DEPECHE MODE's next scheduled show will take place Saturday, May 13 at Jones Beach Amphitheatre in Wantagh, NY.

Birthday Wishes!

The webmaster for Depeche Mode dot com is accepting birthday wishes for Gahan until midnight (LA Time)at dave@depechemode.com. These emails will not be going directly to Gahan, but will get to him via Brat.

Kansas City...

For those who haven't read, Dave Gahan is currently sick. Reports from fans say that he stopped singing about 5 songs into the gig and Martin carried on the for a bit longer before Fletch was reported saying that their "middle man" was sick and the show was concluded.

There are many rumors circulating, ranging from the disrespectful ideas of Gahan being hung-over due to a post-birthday drinking binge to "drinking the water in Mexico". One blogger has said that Gahan was attacked by a bat.

The official Depeche Mode site has not confirmed what has happened, nor have they canceled tonight's show in Chicago. Until then, here's hoping for a quick and sucessful recovery!

Speak & Spell

I recently got the Speak & Spell collectors CD and DVD and I'm thoroughly impressed. The packaging is great and includes liner notes from Daniel Miller.

The DVD was entitled "Do we need to quit our day jobs?" and is very charming and has some GREAT footage of the young Depeche Mode boys. Vince Clarke is interviewed and gives a lot of insight as to the bands composition during the early 80's.

I look forward to the rest of the catalog coming out. I also have Violator and A Broken Frame, but I am watching them in order.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. GAHAN!

Suffer no Longer
"Suffer Well", the third single from "Playing The Angel", and the very first single written by Dave, is out this week on CD and DVD single! Release dates for the other UK formats are on the site (see link). For those of you in the US, iTunes has the tracks available (purchase links are available via the above link). There will be no commercial CD single released in the US.

Robert Smith vs Anton Corbijn?
We are getting preliminary reports that Robert Smith (lead singer of The Cure) is looking to stop further production of the album "Playing The Angel". It is said, through sources, that Robert has a concern that the "Mister Feathers" character that Anton Corbijn created for the "Playing The Angel" cover bears more than a passing resemblance to the cover for The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry" single.

We will provide further information on the impending injunction as soon as it is available.

New tour date info
Date added: second Mexico City (on sale today - March 30th!). Date cancelled: El Paso.

Suffer Well: Simlish
"The Sims 2 - Open For Business", the new expansion pack for the popular "Sims" game, is out now. The game features a special full-length version of "Suffer Well", sung by Dave entirely in the language of the game (Simlish)! To promote the game, EA Games created a special music video for "Suffer Well", using an edited music soundtrack. You must check this out!

Pre-show Music
Due to an extremely high demand, we have put the full track listing of the pre-show concert music. For those of you who wondered what the music was before DM hit the stage, here is your answer. The music was mixed by Mr. Gore.

Remasters: Date Change
Things must change, including sound quality! Coming very soon are the first three titles in the upcoming full studio album reissue series! Not only are the albums remastered, but they include 5.1 surround mixes! Details are available on the micro-site, and if you check the main News page, you'll get a glimpse of who was involved in the remastering.

Update! The date for the UK issues has been pushed back to April 3rd. This date, as well as the US release date, are still subject to change.

Dave Gahan Interview

Q: Does your passion for painting still persist? Have you had a chance
to do some more painting recently?

Yeah, I have painted a lot during the last few years. There are
paintings all around my house. I paint on the walls, I paint on the
floor, I paint on pieces of cardboard. I had a lot of my paintings
stolen from my house. I've been invited to do an exhibition of paintings
in New York, in a gallery there, so it's something I might do in the
future.

Official Live Depeche Mode DVD Material Leak

Official Live Depeche Mode DVD Material Leak
[Source: Side-Line, March 6th, 2006]

It seems that Mute Records keep on having problems with their security as more and more releases are getting leaked online way before the official street dates. Available now on several servers in Germany are cuts taken from official Mute live videos shot in Chicago during the band's current tour.

In a reaction the webmaster of the official Depeche mode site said that the leaks are "a shining example of Mute's security in action". Let us remind you that the band's single and video of "Precious" leaked everywhere when the website of QFilm, the company producing the video, presumably by accident, put up the video on what was supposed to be a secure portion of their website. The page turned out to be available for everyone. After a witch-hunt in which even a Polish fan was used as a scapegoat in a leading role, all became rather quiet around the affair. But with more material getting available it remains to be seen if measures will be taken.

Oh, and for the record, at least 4 soundboard tracks from the 1990 Violation tour have now surfaced. Side-Line reported already about these recordings two years ago, something which at that time was rejected as being untrue...

B-side Depeche Mode Tribute

[Source: Side-Line, March 3rd, 2006]

Cryonica Music are starting the process of gathering interested bands to choose and submit a track for a new Depeche Mode tribute compilation. There are many Depeche Mode tribute compilations out at the moment, but there are none dedicated to arguably some the best Depeche Mode tracks written, the B-sides. If you are interested in contributing a track to this compilation, please contact Cryonica as soon as possible telling which song you would like to cover. Deadline will be Summer 2006.

Songs expected to be included are: "Newborn", "Fools", "In Your Memory", "(Set Me Free) Remotivate Me", "Dangerous", "Sea Of Sin", "Happiest Girl", "My Joy", "Ice Machine", "Free", "But Not Tonight", "Flexible", "Now This Is Fun", "Work Hard", "Fly On The Windscreen" and many more.

DM Sims

The signature sound of legendary alternative rock band Depeche Mode has been translated to The Sims native Simlish language for the first time ever. 'Suffer Well,' a track from Depeche Mode's critically acclaimed album 'Playing the Angel,' has been recorded in Simlish and will be made available to fans of music and PC games through The Sims™ 2 Open for Business.

Depeche Mode's lead singer, David Gahan, said, "Depeche Mode has always been open to new ways of sharing our music, but re-recording a Simlish-language version of 'Suffer Well' just sounded completely bizarre. Of course, that's why couldn't resist doing it."

You can listen to part of the Simlish version in this exclusive new video. It all begins with a robot who falls in love with his creator...

Bonus Tracks Remastered DM Albums

[Source: Side-Line, March 1st, 2006]

As announced exclusively by Side-Line already last year (and as usually denied by the official website and the label at that time), Mute/EMI are to release the entire back catalogue of Depeche Mode as SACD including limited editions holding a DVD as well.

The first three releases to hit the shop shelves are "Speak & Spell", "Music For The Masses" and "Violator". These albums are presented as single CD remastered versions alongside a double disc edition containing a Hybrid Super Audio CD and a newly remixed 5.1 mix of the albums themselves. The DVD discs are further enhanced with extra bonus tracks/remixes and 30+ minute documentaries featuring exclusive live and TV appearances.

The additional bonus tracks for "Violator" are the b-sides "Dangerous", "Memphisto", "Sibeling", "Kaleid", "Happiest Girl (Jack Mix)", "Sea Of Sin (Tonal Mix)" and the 33 minutes documentary "Depeche Mode 89 - 91 (If You Wanna Use Guitars, Use Guitars)."

The limited edition of "Music For The Masses" holds the additional bonus tracks "Agent Orange", "Pleasure, Little Treasure", "Route 66", "Stjarna", "Sonata No.14 in C#m (Moonlight Sonata)", "Never Let Me Down Again (Aggro Mix)", "To Have And to Hold (Spanish Taster)", "Pleasure, Little Treasure (Glitter Mix)" and the 36 minutes documentary "Depeche Mode 87 - 88 (Sometimes You Do Need Some New Jokes)."

Finally "Speak & Spell" holds the following additional bonus tracks on its limited edition: "Ice Machine", "Shout", "Any Second Now", "Just Can't Get Enough (Schizo Mix)" and the 27 minutes documentary "Depeche Mode 80 - 81 (Do We Really Have To Give Up Our Day Jobs?)." All these fine re-releases will be out on March 27th.

Depeche Mode puts Milan Show on DVD
Published: 2006-02-22

Eighties synthpop band Depeche Mode is committing their Milan shows this past weekend to DVD.

"We're quite excited, because the audience went absolutely bananas," keyboardist Andrew Fletcher told Billboard.com. "We did Paris [for the last DVD], and we thought we'd do Milan since we work there a lot, and it worked out really well."

The shows that took place over the weekend of February 18 took place in Milan’s Filaforum, but the DVD isn’t expected to be released until September.

Depeche Mode grew to fame in the eighties when their brand of catchy synthpop resonated with fans all over the world. Their influences are seen in the modern electronic dance scene.

Their current European tour backing their 2005 album Playing the Angel is their most successful UK tour to date. Though the band wrapped up the North American leg of their tour at the end of 2005 they’ll be heading back across the pond for a few dates in April including a headlining gig at the Coachella Music Festival. They will then be touring Europe and the rest of the world through the summer months.

Depeche Mode's two shows the weekend of February 18 at Milan's Filaforum were recorded for a live DVD that is expected to be released in September.

"We're quite excited, because the audience went absolutely bananas," drummer Andrew Fletcher told Billboard.com. "We did Paris (for the last DVD), and we thought we'd do Milan since we work there a lot, and it worked out really well."

The DVD was directed by Blue Leach, who has been traveling with the band since the start of the world tour in support of last year's "Playing the Angel" (Reprise). "He's been on the road with us so he seemed like the obvious choice," Fletcher said. "He's been doing loads of offstage stuff throughout the whole tour, so there will be all that too."

Depeche Mode is enjoying its most successful tour ever in Europe, which plays Paris Tuesday night (February 21) and runs through April 3 in London. A second North American leg kicks off April 27 outside San Francisco and includes a previously announced April 29 headlining appearance at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, California.

"We know how popular it is in the States, and I think the bill looks very interesting," Fletcher said of Coachella. "California is probably our biggest market in the States, so we're looking forward to that."

The subsequent tour is expected to include about 20 dates in North America, including a visit to Mexico. From there, Depeche Mode has more international shows on tap through August 3 in Tel Aviv, Israel. "We're absolutely huge in Israel, and we've never made it over there," Fletcher said. "When we just played in Prague, the Israeli fan club chartered a massive plane with 300-400 people to come over. That will be a really good place to finish."

Afterward, the band is considering shows in South America and Australia, but as Fletcher notes, "We have no plans further than that, apart from having a really good holiday!"

"Playing the Angel" has reinvigorated Depeche Mode's diehard fan base, having spawned the No. 1 Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart hit "Precious" as well as "A Pain That I'm Used To," which peaked at No. 6 on that tally. A new single, "Suffer Well," has just begun to make an impact on radio.

"We realize this album is more tuned in to playing live, more so than 'Exciter' or 'Ultra,"' Fletcher said. "People who have seen us say the new songs don't sound misplaced in the set list." Still, for the summer shows, Depeche Mode will "probably drop a couple of those and add in a couple of old hits."

And how are relations between Fletcher, Martin Gore and David Gahan at this stage of the oft-feuding band's career? "I think they have been good throughout the making of the album and it has sort of continued onwards," Fletcher said. "It's a very good time to be in Depeche Mode at the moment."

A little disappointed but...

As many know, the official Coachella line-up has been released. It appears that although Depeche Mode are still on the official line-up, a lot of the other bands rumored are not. For this reason, I will unfortunately not be attending. Despite my love for Depeche Mode, the trip to the other coast can't really be justified, especially since I'm hoping for a fall US tour (like most Americans!). However, as a note to anyone going...please be sure to take fantastic photos! I'll be sure to post them on here.

So, here are the confirmations:

Depeche Mode and Tool to headline Southern California's seventh annual Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. The lineup features more than eighty artists. Tickets go on sale February 4th at noon.

Depeche Mode Las Vegas show announced. The band will be performing at the Theater Under the Stars, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on April 30th. Tickets will go on sale March 4th at noon.

Future Retro

Classic '80s alternative songs go back to the future this month with
the Rhino release of Future Retro. The collection features 14 tracks by
influential alternative artists like Depeche Mode, Devo, The Cure, and
Echo & The Bunnymen reimagined by renowned DJs for today's club scene.
Encompassing a wide range of styles -- breaks, electro, house, and rock
- Future Retro is already the talk of the dance world.

Among the leading remixers heard on the new CD (which will also be
available in a two-LP vinyl version) are The Crystal Method tweaking
New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle," Jaded Alliance roughing up
Erasure's "A Little Respect," and Static Revenger electrifying INXS'
"Need You Tonight." Several cuts take the original songs to unexpected
sonic territories; DJ Irene reconstructs Book Of Love's "Boy" with
menacing aggro-guitar, and Sparks takes Morrissey's "Suedehead" on an
epic ride powered by organ swells and looping vocals. Catch this wave
of the Future at this site. You can also text
"futureretro" to 74466 for some cool Future Retro ringtones!
