One Million Copies

Depeche Mode have received the IFPI Platinum Europe Award for achieving album sales of more than one million copies of for The Best Of Depeche Mode Volume 1.

New Recoil Album

RECOIL
'subHuman'
2007/Mute Records

AlanAfter a 6 year break from recording, musician/producer Alan Wilder returns with Recoil's 5th studio album. Entitled 'subHuman', it has been provisionally set for release on July 2nd, 2007.

'subHuman' will be available on CD and limited edition gatefold vinyl. A special collector's DVD package will also be issued to include an enhanced stereo CD, a 5.1 Surround Sound version and an exclusive ambient re-working of the entire album. The DVD will also include all the Recoil videos to date.

Collaborating with Recoil is Blues-man Joe Richardson, whose evocative vocal style is complimented by accomplished guitar and harmonica performances. Born in Southern Louisiana, Richardson spent years immersed in the murkier side of New Orleans life and offers a unique commentary on conflict, religion, incarceration and personal struggle.

English singer Carla Trevaskis, a songwriter in her own right, brings an expressive range and control to 'subHuman' and has worked with artists as diverse as Fred de Faye (Eurythmics), Cliff Hewitt (Apollo 440) and Dave McDonald (Portishead).

Wilder's skill at blending diverse and eclectic musical styles with often controversial subjects has produced an album of complex sonic imagery and expansive dynamic range. 'subHuman' asks us to reach within ourselves and extract the very essence of what makes us human - and more importantly what allows us to subordinate others, sometimes with the most brutal consequences. We are all 'subHuman' in somebody's eyes.

Yes, thebitterapple was an April Fools Day prank, and (judging from the response) a pretty good one as well! Thanks to all who emailed, both myself, and my "thebitterapple.com" webmaster alter-ego "BRAndy". :)

Oh, and yes, "The Best Of, Volume 2", which appeared on and offline for a few weeks, was a prank as well. Considering that the micro-site was never mentioned officially, and was only linked on depechemode.com for about 15 minutes, that just goes to show how dedicated DM fans truly are. Good job!

About the Honorees:

Chris Cornell

Ranked 12th in MTV's "22 Greatest Voices in Music" survey, Chris Cornell has been called "the single most dynamic rock and roll force produced by the grunge revolution of the early 1990s." As the frontman for Soundgarden, he marshaled five studio albums including the groundbreaking Superunknown, which sold more than 3 million copies and earned two GRAMMY Awards. His songwriting continued to develop with the mid-Soundgarden side project, the critically acclaimed, eponymously titled release Temple Of The Dog, a collective of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden members who formed in tribute to late Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood. More recently his tenure as the frontman for the rock super-group Audioslave continued his multi-platinum success and produced the hit singles "Like A Stone" and "Cochise" in the millennium.

Cornell will lay fresh ground for himself with his upcoming solo album Carry On (Suretone/Interscope). This album promises to extend his status as a musical risk-taker. As a solo artist he previously explored his creative range on Euphoria Morning, whose single "Can't Change Me" earned a 1999 GRAMMY nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Carry On -- produced and mixed by GRAMMY-winning British producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones, Morrissey, and the Dave Matthews Band) -- showcases Cornell's distinct voice, which Blender magazine dubbed, "one of alt-rock's most elastic instruments." The album will include the Top 10 European hit "You Know My Name," the main title song for the recent James Bond theatrical release, Casino Royale. Cornell wrote and recorded the track with longtime James Bond composer David Arnold for the film. In addition to his work in the music world, Cornell served as the face of the 2006 John Varvatos ad campaign and became a restaurateur with the opening of Black Calavados (BC) in Paris, where he resides part time.

Jeff McClusky

Jeff McClusky's passion for music began while growing up in the Yonkers-Bronxville area of New York, listening to legendary Top 40 WABC/New York at night with a transistor radio on the pillow. By the time he finished grade school, McClusky was singing and playing rhythm guitar in the Hangmen and later, the Grateful Dead-influenced Tidal Wave. He eventually became music director for his Stonehill College radio station, sang a bit in the local coffeehouses and interned at pioneering FM radio station WBCN/Boston. Relying on his relationships with artists and managers such as John Barbis, Judas Priest, Craig Lambert, Eddie Money and Santana, McClusky began his business in his basement apartment in the early 1980s.

From 1984 to 2001, he enjoyed a developing faith, sobriety, a wonderful marriage, and the birth of two daughters, Lauren and Rachel. Professionally during this time, he experienced the growth of his business beyond his expectations with 50 employees in four offices including a deep radio promotion entity, as well as a consulting company which reaches into all corners of music and entertainment. In addition to his support of MusiCares, McClusky works on behalf of education and intern programs and the Special Olympics. "The last six years have been extremely challenging for the business and a humbling reminder that there are no guarantees, and that we must meet our challenges head on," said McClusky. "I start with the knowledge that life has never been better. I have been blessed with a marriage of 23 years, a belief that God continues to have a plan for me, 23 years of sobriety, two teenage daughters, a family relationship that is no less than wonderful, and a business that is challenging and yet, a very exciting place to be -- with all that being considered, I am extremely blessed."

Established in 1989 by The Recording Academy, MusiCares provides a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need. MusiCares' services and resources cover a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies, and each case is treated with integrity and confidentiality. MusiCares also focuses the resources and attention of the music industry on human service issues that directly impact the health and welfare of the music community. Vince Clarke re-writes old unreleased Depeche Mode song

[Source: Side-Line, March 5th, 2007]

Erasure's Vince Clarke has re-written the song called "Let's Get Together" for the Boston MA based preteen pop girl group Girl Authority. The track will be featured on their forthcoming album "Road Trip" (out on 13th March) on Rounder Records. The tune is actually one of the first Vince Clarke ever recorded, pre-dating even Depeche Mode days, though there is a 1981 video recording where Depeche Mode are rehearsing the track (click here for the video).

Some of the original lyrics of the track have been amended so that they are more appropriate for the target young female audience. Also, as an homage to that period, Vince Clarke has re-played his signature keyboard riff from the Depeche Mode track "Just Can't Get Enough" as part of the chorus. The album version of "Let's Get Together" was produced by Grammy-Award winning producer Scott Billington.

Depeche Mode's "Violation" tour to be released on CD/DVD

[Source: Side-Line, February 5th, 2007]

That is at least what a few sources told us lately and since several of those correspondents provided us with correct info over the past years (including the DM back catalogue story, months before it was confirmed by the label), we decided to run the story today.

In a nutshell, Mute/EMI would be considering to release a Depeche Mode packet holding at least a live recording of the famous "Violation" tour. We say 'at least a live recording' because there would be problems releasing a DVD of the tour due to the insufficient quality of the available footage. However this problem might be overcome by 'remixing' the complete video footage so that the final result would be worthwhile after all.

At this point it is all very premature and everything would depend on whether Dave Gahan and Martin Lee Gore plan to release yet another solo record or not. More details as we get them in. For now, let it be a wet dream, but apparently one that could well happen. Right now there is still enough 'new' Depeche Mode material being released to spend some hard earned green ones on. Out by March 26 for instance will be the remastered editions of the cult albums "Black Celebration" and "Construction Time Again". Just like the previous albums they come in a CD/DVD version featuring a documentary and 5.1 surround mixes.

-- THE NEWS --

Happy 2007 everyone. Hope the holidays went well for you all. We will get to the release news in a moment, but first...

BAND PROGRESS REPORT
http://www.depechemode.com/
The band are currently on a break, after the conclusion of their successful "Touring The Angel" world tour. In the coming months, watch for news on what new projects the boys have in the works. In the meantime, be sure to check out The Archives area of the site, which will now be updated weekly with new content (audio, video, images and more). In fact, the first update was this last Friday...

ROCK AM RING 2006
http://archives.depechemode.com/video/live_concert_footage/20060604_rockamring.html
In the first Archives update (of many) of 2007, you can find three tracks from the Rock Am Ring date of the "Touring The Angel" tour. Judas, Stripped and Photographic - all full length video streams!

There was a decision to be made. 90 second excerpts from multiple shows, or a few select songs from each show, in full length. We think you will agree that a full streaming song or two is better than multiple excerpts. More coming, so stay tuned throughout the year! We're back to Friday Archives updates! End your work week with a new DM Archives update!

Now, for the release news...

NEXT BATCH OF REMASTERS
http://remasters.depechemode.com/

http://bestof.depechemode.com/unitedkingdom.html
On February 12th, the "Best Of" album will be being issued on a special three disc LP set! If any of you picked up the recent limited gatefold 12" of Martyr, and were impressed with the deluxe packaging, just wait until you see this! Again, this will be a "Europe only" release, but fans not currently living in Europe can get this release (and many others) via mail order through MuteBank. You will find the link to MuteBank in our "Store" area of the web site. We recommend you check them out.

CONTEST TO END ALL CONTESTS - THE RESULT
http://www.depechemode.com/forthemasses/contest.html

THE DM STORE
http://www.depechemode.com/store/
If you haven't noticed, the DM Store has been cleaned up! Many of you had complaints regarding the navigation in the store. This has now been fixed in the US Store (with the UK store to follow shortly). Also, this year, a number of new items will be hitting the shop. We will make announcements when the new content is ready to go...

Reminders...

http://bestof.depechemode.com/ (click on the "l12 bong 39" Martyr single link at the top of the UK or Germany pages)
The "Martyr" vinyl has been released, and it includes some remixes of classic DM tracks. The limited 12" singles comes in a very clean gatefold sleeve, and is not to be missed. Also out is the "Martyr" 7" picture disc, and a 7" picture disc for the first single from Playing The Angel, "Precious"!

http://www.recordstore.co.uk/mutebank/productdetail.jsp?productPK=unittest-aFPPychnNsarQDC0qN3IEb-1

The Precious 7" picture disc was not originally released when the single first came out last year. A large number of die hard fans gathered together, and through fan site depmod.com, started a petition for the single's release. Ladies and gentlemen, here is your picture disc!

+ OneTwo re-release Depeche Mode co-penned song

[Source: Side-Line, December 23rd, 2006]

Out on February 19th will be the OneTwo single "Cloud Nine". The title track "Cloud Nine" was co-written by Depeche Mode songwriter Martin Gore and also features his guitar work.

For OneTwo, a collaboration between OMD's Paul Humphreys and Claudia Brücken from the German cultact Propaganda, it is the second time the track is being released. Originally recorded for a Propaganda album it found its way onto OneTwo's self released "Item" debut EP (June 2004) when Propaganda split up. The "Cloud Nine" single will also feature an exclusive remix by Blank & Jones of the track, another exclusive remix of the album track "Home" by Manhattan Clique (known from their work with Erasure's Andy Bell) plus a [S.I.T.D.] remix of the only German sung track on OneTwo’s debut: "Kein Anschluss". The single precedes the "Instead" album out on February 26th on There, the band's own label.

Gore News

Mojo magazine reports. Directed by Dutch photographer and long time DM collaborator Anton Corbijn, the new film Control is part-financed by Depeche Mode's Martin Gore.
